What is a restricted free-agent? In the NHL all rookies must sign a three year entry-level contract with a predetermined salary based on draft position. After that expires, they need a new contract and are a free-agent.
However, in order to be an un-restricted free-agent, you must be over the age of 27 or have seven years experience in the NHL.
