A conditioning stint might have been an option for the Leafs, but Granberg is coming off a serious achilles injury and wasn’t going to be see any NHL action without a significant chunk of games spent getting himself back up to speed in the AHL. He was going to be exposed to waivers eventually either way, and he would’ve been in tough to stake a claim to one of the top seven or eight defence spots to avoid this very scenario back in September had he been healthy (that said, it seems less likely he would’ve been claimed back then).
