The 3 Most Likely Bowl Opponents For The Texas Longhorns

It's looking like the Longhorns are headed for the Texas Bowl...and considering how things looked for Charlie Strong's team at the beginning of this season, that's not a bad landing spot at all. With Texas looking to end the season on a high note, here are the teams they could be facing:

LSU

LSU had an up-and-down season, and their 17-0 shutout loss to Arkansas did major damage to their chances of landing an upper- or mid-tier bowl. Quite a few projections now have LSU lining up against Texas in the Texas Bowl, and they're looking like the second-most likely scenario if a traditional rival falls through (more on that later). Texas is 9-7-1 against LSU all time, and their last two matchups have come in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns won the most recent game 35-20 back in 2003.

Florida

Florida is 6-5 thanks to a cancelled early-season game, and they're in a highly transitional period with new coach Jim McElwain coming to town. The bowls don't really know what to do with Florida right now, and they're being linked to a number of lower-tier games across the south. The least likely of the three teams on this list, but Florida would still make for an interesting matchup between two traditional powers trying to rebuild. If A&M backs out and LSU ends up somewhere else, Florida is the next team up.

Texas A&M

This is the one everyone wants, and while there are rumblings that the A&M administration might try to block the matchup, the momentum is building. These teams haven't played each other since A&M left the Big 12, and the Longhorns lead the all-time series 76-37-5. These squads had opposite trajectories this year - A&M started out as one of the hottest teams in the nation while Texas struggled out of the gate, but the Longhorns picked things up as the Aggies began to falter. A Texas-Texas A&M Bowl matchup would be fantastic both competitively and commercially, and both schools have to acknowledge it's what the fans want to see.
