Tennessee Coaching Rumors: New Target Emerges, Martin Hasn't Heard From Vols & More

The Tennessee Volunteers are still looking for a head coach after a bungled search under former athletics director John Currie, but since former head coach Phillip Fulmer has taken over as the AD and replaced Currie, the search has gone in a different direction. Here are all the latest news & rumors on Tennessee's coaching search:

Vols showing interest in Les Miles
Despite Fulmer only being on the job for two days, he has already reached out to former LSU head coach Les Miles, according to Grant Ramey of GoVols247.

Sources told GoVols247 on Saturday that Tennessee has made contact with former LSU coach Les Miles since Fulmer took the reins in a coaching search that’s nearing three weeks old. Miles, according to sources, is interested in the Tennessee job.

Miles has previously expressed interest in the job. He went 114-34 in 11 years, including a national championship and two SEC titles. There may be some reservations about pursuing him given LSU's offensive struggles over the last few years, but he's a proven coach who has a desire to get back to a Power 5 program.

Tee Martin says he hasn't heard from Tennessee
Another name that has been linked to the job is former Vols quarterback and current USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, but he said he has yet to hear from the school.

Along with his role at USC, Martin is also the quarterbacks coach for Nike's Elite 11 QB camps, which has given him up close and personal looks at many high profile QB recruits.  Many consider him to be a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Tennessee's coaching search costing over $14 million
One major downside of the lack of success of this coaching search is how much it will cost the school. Currie's buyout was worth $5.5 million, and when added to the $8.3 million buyout the Vols have to give former head coach Butch Jones, meaning the school already has $13.8 million tied up in paying people not to work for the school anymore. Then there's also the contracts of the assistant coaches.

Currie also made trips to Columbus, OH to meet with Greg Schiano and to Pullman, WA to meet with Mike Leach, and with Currie signing a memorandum of understanding with Schiano, there is some legal question as to whether they owe him millions of dollars or not.
