Yankees Rumors: New York, Boston Could Get Into Bidding War For Mike Moustakas

The New York Yankees are looking to find an upgrade at third base ahead of the trade deadline, and have been gauging the market over the course of the past several months.

New York was hoping the upgrade would come from top prospect Gleyber Torres, but he is out for the year with a torn UCL and will undergo Tommy John surgery. That increases the Yankees' need to make a deal.

Their surprising success this season has them in a position to be buyers at the deadline and appear to have a new target in mind. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Yankees are hoping to go after Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas - and a possible bidding war with the Red Sox could be looming.

Moustakas, enjoying a career-best offensive year, is the most intriguing Royal to monitor over the coming days. He could become the subject of a bidding war between the Yankees and Red Sox as the rivals chase the American League East title.

The Yankees are considering upgrades at third base, where Chase Headley is having one of the worst offensive seasons of his career. (He's also committed the second-most errors of any Major League third baseman this year.) Many in the industry have expected the Yankees' improvement to come from within, thanks to top prospect Gleyber Torres. But Torres injured his left elbow in a Triple-A game Saturday, halting (at least temporarily) his rapid progress through the Minors.

Boston's need at third base is even more glaring, with the worst OPS at the position (.565) of any team in the Majors. Pablo Sandoval has fallen out of the everyday job, despite having two years and $37.2 million left on his contract after the current season ends. Headley, for the record, is under contract for 2018 at $13 million.

Kansas City is preparing to be sellers at the deadline and are open to trading just about everyone on their roster. Moustakas has a .276/.315/.544 batting line with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs this season.

He'd be a big upgrade over Chase Headley, who has really struggled this year for New York. He has posted a .244/.329/.364 batting line so far this season with just four homers and 29 RBIs.
