On January 12 in NYR history: Honoring “The Captain”

NEW YORK - JANUARY 12: Mark Messier and his son Douglas Paul are shown on the big screen watching the #11 New York Rangers banner being raised to the rafters during a ceremony in which the Rangers retired Mark's #11 at Madison Square Garden on January 12, 2006 in New York City. Brian Leetch, unthinkably a Boston Bruin, sent a recorded message that was drowned out by the crowd chanting “bring him back.” It was incredibly emotional night for Messier who had played ten years in New York City in two stints and is still regarded as “The Messiah” for bringing the Cup back to New York.
