Edmonton Oilers win first pick in NHL draft

EDMONTON — Connor McDavid, dubbed the NHL’s next transformational player, in the mould of Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews and, for that matter, Wayne Gretzky, is likely going to be an Oiler.

The Oilers won the NHL draft lottery on Saturday night, earning the right to select first overall at in Sunrise, Fla., on June 26, a massive boost to their sagging fortunes, which have seen them finish out of the NHL playoffs for nine straight seasons.

Oilers assistant general manager Bill Scott, who represented the club at the lottery in Toronto, would not confirm the Oilers will claim McDavid.
