Wings drop thriller in Leafs' final visit to JLA

Detroit — Fittingly, the final game between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Joe Louis Arena was an entertaining one.

But for the Red Wings, not nearly fun enough.

James van Riemsdyk and Auston Matthews scored late goals 1:17 apart Saturday, breaking a tie and sending Toronto to a 5-4 victory.

Mike Green cut the lead to 5-4 with 44.2 seconds left, his 14th goal, but the Red Wings couldn’t get closer.

Toronto (38-24-15) won the season series, winning its fourth consecutive game against the Red Wings (31-35-12), before a loud and passionate crowd.
