NHL draft blog: Rangers expected to take Lafreniere, Yzerman tests negative after COVID exposure

Round 1 of the NHL Draft is just about underway with the New York Rangers expected to take Rimouski winger Alexis Lafreniere with the No. 1 overall pick.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman will participate remotely tonight and tomorrow after being exposed to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19.

Yzerman was expecting to be at Little Caesars Arena, with director of amateur scouting Kris Draper, chief amateur scout Jesse Wallin, and assistant general managers Ryan Martin and Pat Verbeek. Here's Ted Kulfan's story.

The Wings have already been busy today. As Ted reports below, the Wings waived winger Justin Abdelkader in order to buy him out and they loaned center Joe Veleno to Malmo in the Swedish Hockey League.
