Maple Leafs edge Wings in thrilling final visit to JLA

Detroit — Fittingly, the final game between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Joe Louis Arena was an entertaining one.

James van Riemsdyk and Auston Matthews scored late goals 1:17 apart breaking a 3-3 tie, sending Toronto to a 5-4 victory on Saturday night.

Mike Green cut the lead to 5-4 with 44.2 seconds left, his 14th goal, but the Red Wings couldn’t get closer.

Toronto swept the season series, winning all four games against the Red Wings.

Niklas Kronwall tied the score at 14:41 of the third period, cutting to the net and one-timing a pass from Henrik Zetterberg, who whirled behind the net, for Kronwall’s second goal this season.
