The Cowboys Still Need To Find A Backup QB

The Dallas Cowboys are not in need of a franchise QB, thanks to the surprise emergence of Dak Prescott last year. But the backup QB position? That's a potentially serious problem for the Cowboys.

Right now, the Cowboys have Kellen Moore, Zac Dysert and UDFA Cooper Rush. All three have positive traits: Moore is highly intelligent, with a future as a QBs coach, even though he's weak-armed and undersized. Dysert has perhaps the most ability of any of the three, but has bounced around the NFL for a reason. Rush might be a younger version of Moore. So if Prescott goes down, the Cowboys could be in serious trouble. Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com agrees.

"I like where you're going with the backup quarterback concern because I agree," Broaddus said when asked about backup QB being the biggest area of concern. "So much of what the Cowboys do scheme-wise depends on the movement and deception of the quarterback. You just don't get that from Kellen Moore, at least the threat of the position. I worry about the offense bogging down without Prescott in the lineup and would rather have a guy that you don't have to change the scheme to move the ball."

Unlike last year, Tony Romo won't be waiting on the sideline to enter the game. If Prescott goes down, it will be 2015 all over again. Moore is the best of those three, and he only completed 58.7 percent of his passes for 779 yards, 4 TDs and 6 picks that season. Moore is closer to a No. 3 QB than a reliable backup, so it's time for the Cowboys to explore other options.

The good news for the Cowboys is there are some players still unsigned and if the Cowboys think they can pick up the offensive system, they should sign one. Colin Kaepernick's off-the-field actions and (which include zero laws broken) appear to have resulted in teams passing on him. He's still a better player than Moore, by a significant margin. Regardless if you support his beliefs, Kaepernick would help the Cowboys. Robert Griffin III has battled several injury issues, but he'd be a good option for the Cowboys. With Prescott the clear-cut QB, there shouldn't be any real distractions from those two.

The downside is that those two are the only clear-cut upgrade options. There's Shaun Hill, who knows the offense but might just be an older Moore. Of course, the Cowboys could look for a cheaper trade option or add someone if they are cut after the preseason.
