3 Reasons The Cowboys Should Sign QB Robert Griffin III

It's the Dak Prescott Era for the Dallas Cowboys, but that doesn't mean quarterback is no longer a need. Prescott is the unquestioned starter and future, but depth is an issue. Tony Romo is now broadcasting for CBS, while Mark Sanchez is with the Chicago Bears. That leaves only Kellen Moore on the roster. The Cowboys need another backup option and they should adde Robert Griffin III to fill that role.

This isn't to say the Cowboys will sign Griffin, but rather they should. For all his flaws, Griffin still has some of that ability that made him the Rookie of the Year in 2012. There's some assumption here, namely that there's mutual interest between Cowboys and Griffin and that the contract wouldn't be too expensive. But, with that in mind, here are 3 reasons why the Cowboys should sign Robert Griffin III.

Could Fit The System
With Dak Prescott under center, the Cowboys ran a run-first offense with the passing game predicated on play-action. They even ran some read-option to take advantage of Prescott's running ability. That's not all that different from what the Redskins did with Griffin before they broke him. If, God forbid, Prescott went down, Griffin could be a quality fit in the Cowboys' offense. There is one concern though: the Cowboys use a timing-based progression system, something Griffin has not shown he can run. That could cause some issues, but the upside of getting something close to rookie year Griffin is worth it.

Upgrade Over Kellen Moore
The only other QB on the roster is Moore, who is better suited to third string duty. Sure, Moore understands the offense and might have a future as a QB coach, but if Prescott goes down, the Cowboys are in major trouble. The undersized lefty has been in the NFL since 2012, but only saw snaps in the 2015 season. And it wasn't pretty: Moore completed 58.7 percent of his passes in three games, with four TDs and six picks. If Prescott get hurts and Moore is the only other option, the Cowboys might as well give up on the season. Moore isn't good enough to get the job done, even with a great offensive supporting cast. Griffin has the potential to lead the Cowboys to wins if something terrible happened to Prescott.

Risk vs. Reward
The reward of adding Griffin is greater than the risk. At this point in his career, Griffin isn't going to be a diva: he knows he can't afford to be. There won't be any issues with a QB controversy: it's Prescott's team. After getting cut by the Browns, Griffin shouldn't be too expensive either. The Cowboys don't want to spend a ton of money on a backup QB, but Griffin might (or at least should) be willing to sign cheap in an attempt to help rehab his stock. The best case scenario is that Griffin is a quality backup QB, who can keep the Cowboys in the mix for wins in the event Prescott gets hurt. The worst case is that Griffin can't pick up the offense and the Cowboys go with Moore as the backup. With the likes of Shaun Hill, Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Blaine Gabbert making up the rest of the free agent QB market, I'd prefer to add RGIII as the backup.
