Cowboys Sign Former Chargers WR Javontee Herndon

The Dallas Cowboys have added another WR to the roster after releasing WR Lucky Whitehead. ESPN's Todd Archer reports the Cowboys signed WR Javontee Herndon Friday.

The Cowboys worked out Herndon earlier in the day and were impressed enough to give him a contract. The Cowboys worked out other WRs earlier in the week

Herndon missed all of the 2016 season with a knee injury. An 2014 undrafted free agent from Arkansas, Herndon latched on with the Chargers. He was promoted from the practice squad in 2015 after Kennan Allen was hurt. He caught 24 passes for 195 yards in his lone season on an active NFL roster.

Herndon previously worked out for the Texans this offseason and faces a tough battle to make the roster. The Cowboys top four WRs are set, with Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Ryan Switzer not going anywhere. The fifth (and maybe a sixth) spot features a battle between the likes of Brice Butler, Andy Jones and seventh rounder Noah Brown.
