Cowboys Cut WR Lucky Whitehead, Who Says He Wasn't Arrested For Shoplifting

The Dallas Cowboys have already decided to release WR Lucky Whitehead, not long after it was reported he was arrested in Virginia for shoplifting and that there is an arrest warrant out for him.

But in an unexpected and strange twist, Whitehead's agent says Whitehead wasn't arrested and that he wasn't even in Virginia at the time of the shoplifting. Here's what Adam Schefter reports, following a talk with Whitehead's agent.

Lucky Whitehead's agent, David Rich, said his client was not in Virginia when the incident occurred and it's a case of mistaken identity. On June 22, Whitehead was in Dallas, per his flight ticket that Rich has a copy of. Whitehead's United flight left 7:18 am direct to Washington D.C. that morning and landed at 11:30 am - that is 10 hours after the shoplifting crime occurred in Woodbridge, Va.

Rich told the Cowboys he didn't appear in court because he never received the citation and summons. The reason he didn't receive the citation and summons is because he wasn't in the state when the crime occurred, Rich said. Still the Cowboys announced they released Whitehead.

Rich has told the Cowboys this information. He says the plane record speaks for itself. "It's just unfortunate for the kid," Rich said.

In a conversation with Mike Fisher of Scout.com, Whitehead says the same:

"I don't know [who] got arrested in Virginia," Whitehead says. "But it wasn't me. I NEVER once had an altercation with the cops. And come to find out, this happened, they say, at 1:34 a.m. at a Wawa in Woodbridge, Virginia (on a day) that I was in Dallas until 11:20 a.m.''

Whitehead was already on the roster bubble and it appears the alleged arrest (guilty or not) was enough for the Cowboys to cut ties with Whitehead during training camp. Other Cowboys players have had multiple incidents this offseason. Nolan Carroll was arrested for a DUI, Ezekiel Elliott remains the subject of an on-going NFL investigation and DL David Irving was suspended for PED use.

Whitehead was already on the outside looking in on the roster bubble after the Cowboys drafted WR Ryan Switzer. He has caught just nine passes in his NFL career, but served as the team's return man.
