Cleveland Cavs: Top 5 Coaching Candidates As Of May 18th

The Cleveland Cavs' coaching search stays quiet, but the rumor mill is still churning with potential candidates being examined from every angle in the media and on Twitter. With that in mind, we are proud to join in with our Top 5 Cleveland Cavs Head Coaching Candidates As Of May 18th:

5. Mike D'Antoni

Which Mike D'Antoni would the Cavs get? The offensive mastermind which helped to redefine the pace of the NBA game for the entire league, or the insecure sideshow which became Lakers fans favorite punching bag at the end of his time at Staples Center? The Cavs can't afford the setback involved with hiring the latter D'Antoni, which will most likely keep D'Antoni from gracing the top of their list when all is said and done.

4. Lionel Hollins

Lionel Hollins knows defense. He also knows how to get the most out of young players, as evidenced by his work with Mike Conley and Marc Gasol in Memphis. However, the former Grizzlies head coach didn't just burn bridges after being fired by Memphis; he absolutely blew them to little pieces. He may need to show that he can temper his fiery demeanor, especially in his dealings with NBA executives, before he is handed the Cavs' job outright.

3. Alvin Gentry

Count Gentry as being in this coaching search for the long haul. His past work as head coach of the Phoenix Suns may seem mediocre at best, but a majority of that is due to the fact that Gentry was limited by the (lack of) talent he received before being unceremoniously dumped. Cavs GM (and former Suns exec) David Griffin is a fan, and that could go a long way when this search finally gets rolling proper.

2. Adrian Griffin

The Cavs have had the Chicago Bulls assistant coach since before the second coming of Mike Brown, and now would be the perfect time for the team to strike. Griffin's name is still hush-hush enough to keep his price down in negotiations, despite the fact that his talent as a coach under Tom Thibodeau is plain as the eye can see. If the Cavs are really looking to rebuild from the ground up while keeping their focus on the defensive side of he ball, Griffin's their man.

1. George Karl

George Karl "really wants [the] Cavs' coaching job." Repeat. George Karl "really wants [the] Cavs' coaching job." It is possible that the Cavs will look toward a younger coach that can learn and grow with the talent on board, but still...George Karl wants to be in Cleveland. The ultimate effort coach is on line one. The Cavs desperately need to at least answer the phone.
