Former BYU golfer Mike Weir opens U.S. Open with adventurous round of 3-over-par

Pebble Beach, Calif. • Considering the way he started his round at the 119th U.S. Open — with back-to-back bogeys — Sandy’s Mike Weir is pleased to be sitting at 2-over-par 73 heading into Friday’s second round.

Weir, 49, a BYU product, wasn’t the only golfer with Utah ties to enjoy relatively benign conditions in the morning at cool, cloudy Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Scott Piercy of Las Vegas, who started his college career at BYU, shot a 4-under 67, despite making a bogey on the relatively easy par-5 18th hole. Piercy was tied for second when the morning wave of players had completed their rounds.
