NEW YORK CITY — In an instant, Xavier men's basketball was forced to adapt its strategy against the St. John's University Red Storm following a game-ending injury suffered by sophomore guard Edmond Sumner.

Depending on the severity of Sumner's unspecified injury, the Musketeers could be forced to alter their approach for an extended period.

The No. 24 Musketeers (15-6, 5-3 Big East) were able to hold off a late St. John's (10-13, 4-6 Big East) surge and grind out an 82-77 win, but Sumner's exit unquestionably affected the final minutes, Xavier head coach Chris Mack said, adding that Sumner will undergo an MRI Monday.
