'God has already ordered your steps': How Jonas Hayes ended up a Xavier basketball coach

Twelve years before James L. Hayes died from a battle with dementia, he had a conversation with his son, a conversation his son remembers and carries with him today.

It’s a memory that still makes Jonas Hayes smile.

It was 2004 and Hayes was nearing the end of his college basketball career at the University of Georgia. His dilemma wasn’t unique, but his decision was.

“We all sat around and my father gave me the best advice: ‘Jonas, you make a decision now that you think you’ll be able to live with 10 years down the line,’” Hayes said.
