As a gesture of goodwill, Chris McIntosh and the Badgers athletic board extended the contract of Luke Fickell, the head coach of the University of Wisconsin football program, on Friday afternoon.
The Wisconsin Badgers follow a unique process for extending head coaching contracts for those unfamiliar. Unlike schools that renegotiate deals as the expiration dates approach, most Badgers coaches rarely see their contracts come close to expiration. The athletic department typically extends them annually to maintain full-length contracts.
Other Wisconsin head coaches to get their contracts extended by the athletic board include Kelly Sheffield (volleyball), Paula Wilkins (women’s soccer), and Neil Jones (men’s soccer).
