The two-time world championship silver medalist took the early lead and then settled behind former University of Wisconsin athlete Evan Jager, timing his run until surging back into the lead as the bell sounded and finishing in 8 minutes, 03.28 seconds.
He started his celebrations as soon as he'd cleared the last barrier, looking to the crowd and waving his arms around for the last 50 meters of the race. Kenya has won the event at every Olympics dating back to 1984.
