Badgers sports roundup: Cross country teams open season with wins at home

The University of Wisconsin men's and women's cross country teams got off to a running start on Friday as both posted victories in the Badger Season Opener at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course at University Ridge.

A pair of redshirt freshmen led the way for the No. 11 UW women, as Shaelyn Sorensen edged Erin Wagner by a tenth of a second to take individual honors in the 4,000-meter women's race. Sorensen, from Lake Elmo, Minnesota, finished in 15 minutes, 4.9 seconds. Wagner, from Crystal Lake, Illinois, was right behind in 15:05.0.

Sophomore Colette Richter was fifth for the Badgers, leading another wave of four straight UW runners past the finish line.
