With an emphatic 9-1 victory over the Houston Aeros 40 years ago Friday, the Winnipeg Jets celebrated the first major hockey trophy for the city in more than seven decades.
The win gave the Jets a four-game sweep of the two-time defending AVCO Cup champions, who were led by Gordie Howe, and put an end to two years of questions surrounding their ability to win championships with a core made up of European players.
