Caps' defenceman Karl Alzner scored his second goal of year on a point shot that looked to change direction and beat Winnipeg starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck high with just 43.3 seconds left in the period.
Washington goalie Braden Holtby was rock solid in the opening period, stopping 14 shots.
Jets left-winger Nikolaj Ehlers and centre Adam Lowry each had three shots in the period.
Winnipeg is 4-5-0 on the season, while the Capitals are 5-2-1.
