Wichita State freshman Jared Belardo named regional field athlete of the year

Wichita State freshman Jared Belardo earned Midwest Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors on Friday.

Belardo, from Leavenworth, won the long jump and triple jump at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships. His long jump distance of 25 feet, 9 1/2 inches set a school record and is ninth nationally this season. Earlier this season, he set a triple jump record with a leap of 51-11 3/4.

Belardo will compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches votes on male and female athletes from nine regions around the country.
