Wichita State's plan was to batter Jacksonville State with its size. Jaime Echenique did it early, before foul trouble limited his minutes.
That handed the job to freshman Morris Udeze, who had made one shot in the past two games. Udeze, with some help from Echenique, produced in Wednesday's 69-65 win over the Gamecocks. He scored eight points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds to help the Shockers avoid a second home loss.
"He's a young guy, and he's trying to get better every day," Echenique said.
