TEMPE, Ariz.- The Western Michigan softball team opened the 2017 season with a 5-1 win over San Jose State in Tempe, Ariz., at the Kajiwawa Classic.
Sophomore pitcher Jordan Kurth hurled a complete game and allowed just four hits and one walk, holding the Spartans to an unearned run while striking out two.
Senior center fielder Ivy Schaaf gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead in the the third, hitting WMU's first home run of the year. Sophomore shortstop Jenna Faultersack hit a leadoff single to left field and with two outs, Schaaf took the first pitch she saw and drove out the ball out over the field in left.
