WMU first-year tight end Gio Ricci team's 'most improved player'

KALAMAZOO, MI - Western Michigan tight end Gio Ricci was a fraction of a second away from turning a solid outing against Bowling Green into a career one.

Trailing 35-28 early in the fourth quarter, WMU quarterback Jon Wassink dodged a free Bowling Green rusher, then lofted a 27-yard pass over the shoulder of his 6-foot-3, 220-pound tight end, who appeared control the ball with two feet down in the end zone, before safety Montre Gregory jarred the pigskin loose with a big hit.

Officials reviewed the play and ruled Ricci failed to possess the ball long enough to secure the catch, which didn't mesh with what WMU head coach Tim Lester saw, at least upon getting a second look from the jumbotron.
