WMU coach Tim Lester recalls 1999 season opener in preparation for No. 4 USC

KALAMAZOO, MI - The voice of legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson boomed through the speakers announcing the Trojans of USC had arrived.

A short time later Southern California's fight song, "Fight On," echoed across the field.

The sounds weren't directed at a capacity crowd inside the Rose Bowl, rather the empty bleachers at Kalamazoo's Waldo Stadium.

It was the first day of fall camp, and first-year Western Michigan football coach Tim Lester wanted to make sure his team understood what it's preparing for.

The Broncos open the season Saturday, Sept. 2 at fourth-ranked USC for a 5:15 p.
