Saginaw Sugar Beets clinch playoff spot behind Western Michigan hitters

The Saginaw Sugar Beets made their first season of baseball a success, clinching a playoff spot with a win Thursday at Grand Lake.

The playoff run comes thanks to a trio of players from Western Michigan University.

Connor Charping went 4-for-5 with his first homer of the season, leading the Sugar Beets to an 8-6 win over the Mariners. The win gives Saginaw a 23-15-1 record, clinching at least a third-place finish in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League Northern Division.

Charping, from Trenton, saw limited playing time at Western Michigan as a freshman, but jumped at the chance to get regular at-bats with the Sugar Beets.
