A graduate of Miami University and the University of Michigan, Dales taught high school P.E. before joining the Broncos as head coach of the track and field and cross-country teams in 1953. Dales’ renowned tenure at WMU gave the school its only two national championship teams in any sport in 1964 and 1965, and an incredible all-time record of 79-13-1 in cross country and 113-35 in dual track meets which makes him the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history in regard to team wins. With limited resources Dales built his program from the ground up, not once suffering a losing record or finishing below third in conference standings over his 17-year coaching career.
