Northern Illinois AD wants Group of Five football playoff

DALLAS -- Should Western Michigan be playing for the Group of Five championship? If Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier gets his way, that could happen in the future.

Frazier told ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy it's time to consider a playoff for the secondary group of conferences.

"There is absolutely no ability for us (teams in the Group of Five) to be in that national title conversation," Frazier told ESPN's McMurphy. "That's just reality. Anyone that says we can: that's a flat-out lie."

Under the current rules of the College Football Playoff system the highest ranked Group of Five team is guaranteed a spot in a New Year's Six bowl, either the Cotton, Fiesta or Peach.
