NCAA sack leader, Ball State injuries are things to watch in WMU's MAC opener

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Western Michigan football team gave fourth-ranked USC a scare, then failed to score an offensive touchdown the following week against Michigan State.

Those opening weeks are of little consequence now, as WMU begins what coach Tim Lester calls the second phase of the Broncos' season.

WMU hosts Ball State 7 p.m. Saturday at Waldo Stadium in the teams' Mid-American Conference opener.

"There's something about MAC play and conference play in general, where everyone knows each other and what you did in the first four games, you can kind of throw out the window," Lester said.
