Men's basketball program forced to reroute after alum Saddi Washington turns down offer

When Western Michigan athletic director Kathy Beauregard made the decision to move on from longtime men’s basketball coach Steve Hawkins earlier in the month, plan “A” was clear.

If WMU alum and 15-year college assistant coach Saddi Washington wanted his first head coaching job at his alma mater, it was all his.

But Washington ultimately turned the offer down after FaceTiming with Beauregard last week while admitting how difficult of a decision it was.

“It was a very tough but honest conversation to not pursue the job considering my love for the university and my admiration for her (Beauregard) as a longtime friend,” Washington told Tony Paul of The Detroit News.
