This year it was announced that the Homecoming Classic would be “retired,” according to Cheryl Roland, WMU’s executive director of university relations.
“The race became more and more complex to run as the years went by,” Roland said. “As the campus got busier on the Saturday of Homecoming, it became increasingly difficult to run. We looked at it carefully last year, and made the decision to retire it.”
Roland said that the retirement was due to multiple factors, including the difficulty of closing the majority of campus for an extended period of time, and the ever-growing population of volunteers and racers, which came out to around 2,000 people total last year.
