KALAMAZOO, MI – USC freshman running back Stephen Carr, a former 5-star recruit, powered his way into the end zone to give the Trojans a 28-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
The 1-yard run capped a 12-play, 56-yard drive, and it appeared to give the Trojans the momentum they needed to put away a scrappy Western Michigan football team.
Favored by 27 points entering Saturday’s season opener, a Trojans team of blue-chip prospects figured to make quick work of the Broncos and their roster of former 2- and 3-star recruits.
Then, Darius Phillips returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards, tying it back up at 28 and proving the underdogs from Kalamazoo had a little more fight in them.
