Sparking from a staggering statistic often highlighted in the Kalamazoo Gazette, the minority dropout rate in Kalamazoo Public Schools is around 50 percent. As a pillar of the community, Hawkins knew something had to be done. As a Bronco for a Day participant, you were able to attend practice, eat lunch, and even go to class with a player. Hawkins wanted students to see what it was like to study and go to class. Unfortunately, a lack of involvement from the schools caused it to die down.
Flash forward years later and Coach Hawkins along with his wife, Kelly, had the desire to do something else.
