Western started with the ball, and just seven plays into the game Jon Wassink was intercepted by Josiah Scott. Western forced MSU to punt, which was followed up by a Western punt.
It took MSU just four plays to go 79 yards, capped by a 61-yard run by quarterback Brian Lewerke, giving MSU a 7-0 lead.
Western followed up with a three and out, and Darius Phillips intercepted Lewerke on the fourth play of their following drive. Western couldn’t capitalize, as they were forced to punt, and MSU followed with a punt of their own.
After forcing Western to punt again, MSU put together a nine play, 51-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard pass from Lewerke to LJ Scott for a touchdown, giving MSU a 14-0 lead.
