Western Michigan lost to North Dakota on Friday night 5-3 in a desperation effort to be back-to-back winners of the Penrose Cup. WMU entered the weekend needing all six potential standings points to win the cup.
North Dakota started the scoring off first to quiet the raucous Lawson crowd. A couple of nice saves from Hampton Slukynsky kept the Hawks off the board early, but a redirection in front of the net beat him to put ND up 1-0.
It didn’t take long for a Western response, and William Whitelaw found Liam Valente on the breakaway, and he promptly tied the game at one.
