WKU plays role in UTEP's celebration of 1966 championship

EL PASO, Texas — Even in a brutal loss, Western Kentucky admitted Saturday was something special at UTEP.

The Miners celebrated the 50th anniversary of their trail-blazing 1966 national championship team, complete with a sold-out crowd and a 93-89 comeback win over WKU in overtime at the Don Haskins Center.

"I think it's great for them," WKU coach Ray Harper said. "I wish we could've spoiled it, and we had the opportunity."

UTEP pulled out all the stops for its celebration, paying homage to the first team to start five black players in a NCAA championship game.
