WKU hires Mike Sanford as head football coach

Mike Sanford, Notre Dame offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, is the Hilltoppers' new head coach, WKU announced Wednesday morning. An introductory news conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Harbaugh Club at Houchens-Smith Stadium.

Sanford replaces former coach Jeff Brohm, who left Dec. 5 to take over head coaching duties at Purdue.

Sanford is a familiar name with the Hilltopper program. He was quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator in 2010 on former coach Willie Taggart’s first WKU staff.

Sanford has risen through the coaching business quickly since then, working as an offensive assistant at Stanford from 2011-13, as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Boise State in 2014 and in his current position at Notre Dame the last two seasons.
