LOUISVILLE – Twenty-three-point underdog Western Kentucky got out to a 14-0 lead Saturday against Louisville, outgained the Cardinals 428-292 and had a chance to take the game to overtime.
WKU kicker Ryan Nuss barely missed a 51-yard field goal as time expired and UofL held on to take down the Toppers 20-17 at Cardinal Stadium.
Visiting WKU (0-3) jumped out to a two-touchdown lead by the second quarter. The heavily favored Cards (2-1) chipped away and finally took their first lead of the game, 20-17, with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter.
That was enough for coach Bobby Petrino’s squad in the first meeting between the in-state schools since 1998.
