White hopes to reward Helton's faith in Hilltopper defense

Clayton White is still leading Western Kentucky’s defense thanks to what he calls “a leap of faith” by coach Tyson Helton.

White wants to reward the new Hilltopper coach’s confidence in him and his defensive staff. And he wants to start that process right away.

Helton was hired Nov. 27 as WKU’s new coach to replace Mike Sanford, who was fired Nov. 25 after two seasons. He assembled his coaching staff with an eye toward overhauling the Toppers’ offense but maintaining continuity on defense.

White was retained as WKU’s defensive coordinator. Assistants Maurice Crum (linebackers), Jimmy Lindsey (defensive ends) and Kenny Martin (defensive tackles) were also kept on board.
