A 6-7 record isn’t what fans had in mind for Western Kentucky’s 2017 football season.

The season came on the heels of back-to-back Conference USA titles and was the program’s first losing campaign since going 2-10 in 2010. The Hilltoppers lost five of their last six games, including a Cure Bowl defeat to Georgia State.

The Southpoint Casino in Las Vegas last month set the Toppers’ over/under win total at 4½. By comparison, WKU won a combined 23 games between the 2015 and ’16 seasons.

Athletic director Todd Stewart compared the Hilltoppers to a stock, saying that the 2017 season was “a market reset” after the program’s peaks in the years prior.
