New Hilltopper coach Helton emphasizes continuity with defensive staff

Tyson Helton comes from an offensive background, and he’s tasked with jump-starting a Western Kentucky attack that fell sluggish the last two seasons.

Helton was introduced Nov. 27 as WKU’s new coach. One of his first moves was retaining four of the five defensive assistants who served during the 2018 season under former coach Mike Sanford.

Defensive coordinator Clayton White and position coaches Maurice Crum (linebackers), Jimmy Lindsey (D-ends) and Kenny Martin (D-tackles) are all staying on the new coach’s staff.

Sanford’s only full-time defensive assistant who wasn’t retained by Helton was safeties coach Jami DeBerry.
