Hilltoppers prevail in slugfest, advance to C-USA title game

“When you get a choice this time of year, I love a slugfest,” WKU coach Rick Stansbury said after a 57-49 WKU victory over the Monarchs in a C-USA semifinal at The Star.

The No. 3 seed Toppers (24-9) hit only six second-half field goals. They still ground out the win against an ODU squad that’s allowed a league-low 62.5 points per game this season.

WKU went through its second-worst shooting night of the season (36.7 percent from the floor) but limited the No. 2 seed Monarchs (25-7) to a 36.5 percent shooting clip, outrebounded them 37-35 and made 18 free throws to Old Dominion’s 10.
