6-6 regular season 'absolutely disappointing' for 2017 Hilltoppers

MIAMI – Eleven months ago, Todd Stewart kept going back to one phrase when talking about hiring a new coach to lead Western Kentucky’s football program.

“Keep the train rolling,” was the message WKU’s AD repeated in the December days after former coach Jeff Brohm left for Purdue. Stewart wanted a man to lead the program that could build on two straight Conference USA championships, six straight winning seasons and postseason success, which included a third straight bowl win later that month.

Stewart tabbed Mike Sanford as the coach to fulfill that mission. After an autumn of ups-and-downs in Sanford’s first season, the WKU football train has stalled.
