MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia has agreed to guarantee the final year of defensive coordinator Tony Gibson’s contract regardless of whether Dana Holgorsen remains head coach, sources told MetroNews.
Paid $650,000 this season, Gibson’s salary climbs to $750,000 in 2016. He is scheduled to earn $700,000 in 2017, but that final season previously was linked to Holgorsen remaining the head coach. Under recent negotiations, West Virginia has removed “the Holgorsen clause” and guaranteed Gibson’s deal through 2017.
Athletics director Shane Lyons—refuting a report that Holgorsen’s job security for 2016 was in peril—confirmed last week the head coach would return next season.
