After early season setbacks that saw losses to perennial powers Penn State and Georgetown, and tough draws to Arkansas, Purdue and Northwestern; it appeared that Mountaineers had righted the ship and were headed to a share of their sixth consecutive Big XII regular season title (and 17th overall conference title), having reeled off a 7-1 conference record, including an incredible 2-1 come-from-behind win versus then #13 Texas with their only conference loss came in a gritty OT bout with Baylor.
Kansas had other ideas in mind as the Jawhawks stunned the Mountaineers in OT in Morgantown, with a 1-0 win.
