West Virginia draws LIU-Brooklyn in men’s NCAA soccer opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc doesn’t know much about NCAA tournament opponent LIU Brooklyn beyond its affiliation with the Northeast Conference.

Yet there was one small detail he was able to rattle off Monday after learning his team was facing the Blackbirds — their coach, TJ Kostecky, was LeBlanc’s coach when he played in the New Jersey Olympic Development Program 14u program.

“There’s a little history there going back some time,” LeBlanc said.

The Mountaineers (13-6-0) earned their first NCAA tournament bid since 2011 following a Mid-American Conference regular-season crown — the program’s first conference title since LeBlanc’s debut season in 2006 in the Big East.
