Vance spearheads 5-hit shutout as WVU evens weekend series

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ross Vance and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout and West Virginia used a four-run outburst in the fourth inning to beat Charleston Southern 5-0 on Saturday afternoon, squaring the opening weekend series at a game apiece.

Ray Guerrini put the Mountaineers ahead with a two-run double before two more runs came around on KC Huth’s sacrifice squeeze.

Vance (1-0) used his breaking ball to coaxed nine groundouts over five innings. He pitched around four hits, one walk and an error, and kept the Bucs scoreless despite allowing the leadoff batter to reach four times.
